Questions to ask your interviewer

Showing up with no questions, or a generic one you could ask about any company, is a quiet miss — not disqualifying, but a small signal that you were coasting through the conversation.

Questions that actually get you information

  • "What does success look like in this role after six months?" — surfaces real expectations, not the job posting's wish list.
  • "What's something the team is currently finding difficult?" — an honest interviewer's answer here tells you more about the day-to-day than anything else you'll ask.
  • "How does the team decide what to work on?" — reveals process maturity and how much autonomy you'd actually have.

Questions worth avoiding

Anything answerable from the company's public website (shows you didn't look), and anything about compensation/benefits in a technical or early-stage interview — that belongs later in the process, usually with a recruiter.

Using it to your advantage

Prepare two or three questions ahead of time, but let the conversation generate a genuine follow-up too — referencing something specific the interviewer said earlier reads as attentiveness, not a script. If time runs short, one well-chosen question beats three shallow ones.
